How to Teach Your Bird to Step Up

Build trust at the cage
Spend time near the cage talking softly and offering treats through the bars. Move slowly and let your bird come to the front of the cage on their own terms before any training begins.

Present your hand as a perch
Hold your index finger or a handheld perch horizontal, just above your bird’s feet at chest level. Keep your hand steady — wobbling makes birds reluctant to commit.
Good to know: Find a treat your bird loves and reserve it only for training sessions.

Add the cue and reward instantly
Say “step up” in a bright, consistent tone. The moment a foot lifts onto your hand, praise and treat. If your bird leans away or pins their eyes, pause and try again later.

Practice in short sessions
Repeat a few times per session, once or twice a day. End every session on a success, even a tiny one. Most birds step up reliably within one to two weeks.
- Keep sessions under 5–10 minutes
- Never push your hand into the bird’s chest
- Reward every correct step, every time
